The Community Robotics, Education and Technology Empowerment Lab (CREATE Lab) at Carnegie Mellon University (learn more) explores socially meaningful innovation and deployment of robotic technologies. The CREATE Lab specifically aims to empower a technologically fluent generation and empower everyday citizens and scientists with affordable environmental sensing and documentation instruments, and powerful visualization platforms for sense-making and sharing of gathered scientific data - to promote evidence based decision making, public discourse and action.
Two of the Lab’s most recent projects focus on big data and data visualization. The Earth Timelapse shows over 30 years of Landsat satellite images as an explorable timelapse, allowing users to track human impact and natural changes anywhere on the planet. For example, a user can watch as the Amazon Rainforest is converted to farmland in Rondônia, Brazil, and instantly understand the impact of deforestation; or watch as Shanghai grows over the past three decades to encompass surrounding areas, or use Earth Timelapse’s explorable data sets to witness changes in atmospheric CO2 over time. Earth Timelapse visualizes massive data sets all over the world in ways never before possible. The new Fluency project will empower students and teachers to participate in the big data movement by encouraging inquiry, narrative, and advocacy in the classroom - combining big data with conventional storytelling and personalizing problem-based learning.
On the data collection side, CREATE Lab’s environmental sensing tools include Speck: a low-cost, indoor air quality monitor that detects fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and informs users about changes and trends in particle concentration; and CATTfish, a cost-effective water quality monitor designed for both home and industry use. Both technologies allow users to track data over time, finding trends and exploring invisible aspects of their surroundings.
Participants will tour the CREATE Lab, be introduced to several projects produced by the Lab, and explore how citizens can chart their technology future and community's prospects for quality of life.
